A board that will elevate your game. I’ve been riding for several years and own all types of boards including a Proto HD and Proto Type 2. I also own a Donek Knapton Twin specifically for carving and consider myself an Advanced Rider (not an expert). Let me tell you how good this board is. It’s stiff and wide enough (157X) to sink deep carves on groomers, holds an edge at speed, it’s super light and flickable in the trees, the pop on this board means hitting rollers and side hits are fun all day long. It’s an all mountain shredder unlike any I’ve owned. If I had to state what my top praise is on this board, it’s the combo of being light and agile along with the stiffness and pop of a heavier full camber board. The Triple Camber didn’t take long to get used to (a lap or two) but after 7 or more days on the board it really started to shine. There are things on other boards I was reasonably decent at doing, with this board it’s just an afterthought. It does what you want it to do and in a way that makes it all too easy. Not sure if I’d recommend this for a beginner, but otherwise I’d say strap in and rip it.

    • Chris Harris

      Thx Phil! Very thorough review.

This board is so sick. I’ve been able to ride this board in icy conditions, hardpack, slush, and powder and this board is fun to ride in every condition I’ve put it through. The board is stiff and very damp which makes it easy to hard charge down the mountain. You can tell the board is doing you a lot of favors absorbing everything under your feet. The general feeling of this board is locked-in and confident.

The edge hold really is fantastic. It gives you so much confidence in your edges without giving you that twitchy or catchy feeling at all.

This board also loves to ride powder. In 12 inches of powder and without any extra binding setback the board floats great with very little effort. I found myself adding a little bit of extra weight to my back-foot if I didn’t have enough speed. In powder this board feels a bit more surfy than normal but still pretty precise. As is the common theme, it loves to go fast.

I would recommend this board for anyone that loves to charge down the mountain, lay down hard carves and hunt powder in the same day.

I would not recommend this board for beginners because of how stiff it is and how fast it wants to go. I would also not recommend this for park riding.

    • Chris Harris

      Thx Gavin!

  3. Jesse (verified owner)

This board holds an edge over than anything I have ridden, especially in variable conditions. Confidence is huge at high speed and it delivers a solid, planted feeling regardless of terrain. Great job to the team at NS. I can tell a lot of time and effort went into this.

    • Chris Harris

      Thx Jesse!

Board rides great. Be aware that the top sheet doesn’t look nearly as bright and colorful as the photos. The blue is barely visible and the rainbow is very muted. It’s obviously more important that it rides great but it was a bit disappointing given it’s 600.

  5. Andrew Morrissette

There’s not much more to say than wow. This board is absolutely next level. I was choosing between a couple of the Never Summer’s and reached out on Instagram for a recommendation, big shout out to the team there – they took the time to chat with me to see my needs and ultimately recommended this board, and boy am I glad they did!

This bad boy is a beast! Carves like a dream, steamrolls the junk, and tears down the mountain! The Proto FR is rock solid at speed, but still maneuverable at lowers speeds. I have never felt more confident heading down the mountain than I have strapped to the Proto FR. Might as well call this deck Vin Diesel, because it is fast and furious.

    • Chris Harris

      WOW! Thx Andrew!

For the past 6 years (250+ days) I have been riding the NS Cobra and absolutely love it! This season I treated myself to the Proto FR 161x and was amazed with its performance on day 1. I have now ridden the board 7x in different conditions. Living in the east conditions are frequently hard packed. I instantly noticed the nose and tail had no chatter at high speed. The comfort level at high speed was very impressive over my Cobra. My top speed on my cobra was 62MPH and I think this year I will crack that on the FR with ease. The board also felt as if it had a larger range of contact to the snow, resulting in more edge grip. In slick conditions (icy) the board gave me more confidence that it would not slip out from under me without notice. I rode 4 runs on fresh snow (only 4 inches) and it was very smooth and fast. Overall this board is very playful in the bumps and pops very well so you can easily double over bumps. I’ll be at Copper MTN in February and cannot wait to put this board in the woods on some fresh pow, drop some rocks and torpedo down some groomers. My daughters also love their new NS boards, proto mini and an Infinity,

    • Chris Harris

      Love it! Thx Rudy.

  7. Eric (verified owner)

This board is AMAZING! I love it! I ride in the East. This board dominates in East Coast conditions!. The edge hold is unbelieve. Zero chatter at high speeds. The board is stiff, However, I find it very playful. It is also cruises in the flats. This is my 4th NS board. They keep getting better and better!!

    • Chris Harris

      Thx for the support Eric!

  8. Robbie Hoechst

I picked up the 161x FR. This board rips. My current ride is a PT2 164x and a Ripsaw 160x. Both boards are great but the FR is a total game changer. It has superior edge hold. Zero chatter. Rides though anything that is in front of it. If you are on the fence about getting one just do it. You will smile all the way to the bottom and never want to leave the hill. Great job Never Summer. You have truly raised the bar.

    • Chris Harris

Glad you’re enjoying the ride! Thanks for the feedback Robbie.

  9. Chris Gordon

I can’t begin to describe how great of a board this is. I’ve ridden this about 7 times this year and my riding has improved dramatically because of this board. After a long break from riding, I got back into it last year and got a NS Westbound. I loved the WB, but having read so many great reviews I decided to pull the trigger on the FR and I’m so glad I did. Riding this thing makes snowboarding that much more fun as it can do everything asked of it and with that my confidence has soared. This board rips through pow, trees, groomers, etc., with ease and it holds an edge unlike anything I have ever ridden. Love, love, love the Proto FR and give it a strong 10/10. A big high 5 to NS and their team.

    • Chris Harris

Thanks Chris! So psyched you’re loving the FR.

I currently ride a Snowtrooper (which I have had for 5 seasons) and a Maverix (season 3) for the deep powder days at Steamboat and I love both boards, but I always wanted to try out a Proto. Went to the NS open house (where I got my previous boards) and found a Proto FR and made the impulse buy. I love the surfy feel of the Maverix in the pow so I was somewhat skeptical if this would replace my other boards. It has in spades. Finally, with the advent of real winter, I broke it out for the first time three weeks ago up at the boat. In my opinion, this board is a quiver killer. Not only does it carve, shoots straight lines through the trees and lands solid, it floats like a dream in the deep pow pow. The only drawback I have noticed was it rode a bit different on the flats then my other 2 boards, just took some getting use to. Definitely a worthy board and the other 2 are now in semi-retirement for sure.

    • Chris Harris

Thanks Marc! The difference feel is all in the innovation. It does take a second to get accustomed to it. Once you do though…it’s a whole new world.

I must have been 17 when I bought my first Never Summer Board back in the early 2000s. It was a Never Summer Heritage limited edition. The board crushed anything I threw at it, moguls, powder, ice, etc. After almost 20 years of riding 30 days a year the board still held up and ripped. This gave me the sense that Never Summer makes a quality, durable product. I decided to upgrade and chose the Proto FR. The responsiveness is amazing. The edge transfer is so quick that I feel like I’m in the air going from heel to toe. The dampener makes for soft landings and no chatter through the crud. The rocker still makes the board fun and buttery but it feels solid at high speeds and sharp carves. Good in moguls due to its responsiveness and I’m looking forward to a pow day if that ever comes to Colorado. Big fan of my new purchase.

    • Chris Harris

      Thx Pat!

I’m 43 and I have been riding for 15 years. I ride 30+ days a season. I mainly ride Brighton and Snowbird. I love big steep lines, deep powder, cliffs, and trees. I purchased my first never summer board legacy 10 years ago. I hated that board and never looked at another NS for years. last winter I flew into Colorado to meet some friends and I rode one of his NS proto boards around Copper and Breck. I fell in love with that board. I wanted to pick up a new board this season and decided it was time to look into another NS. When I found the NS proto–FR I was instantly intrigued. After familiarizing myself with the details and specs of the board I had to find out for myself if the hype was real. I was a little skeptical with the directional shape board since I typically ride twins. I decided to pull the trigger and make the purchase anyway. Unfortunately, I was unable to find one, so I contacted NS and they located me the 161 I was looking for. Awesome customer service!!!
I have ridden this board 2 days while switching out with my other favorite boards (lib tech TRS pro 161.5 and YES basic 158). The past 6 days I have only ridden my new proto-FR. This board crushes it ALL. Still early in the season but I am looking forward to many more days pushing this board to the limits. I feel like this board was made for me! Never summer has made me a believer. You guys nailed it with this design.

    • Chris Harris

Thanks Eric! It’s a lot to wrap the head around…but riding is believing.

When I first heard about this board I was very skeptical……triple camber??? now you’re just being ridiculous, as someone who prefers more traditional camber dominant shapes I thought to myself…..stop trying to reinvent the wheel or build a better mousetrap. Boy was I wrong! This board is incredible, from its vice like edge hold, incredible pop, trench digging sidecut, bomber stability, and outstanding build quality it is simply remarkable. Over the years I have ridden hundreds of boards, my current quiver is about 50 deep and this is by far one of the best boards I have ever ridden, will never leave home without, and will keep forever.

    • Chris Harris

You’re comment is exactly why we do what we do James! Thx!
      Heads up…more triple cambers coming!

  14. kevinzupp

Just took out my Proto FR this past weekend in Killington, Vermont.
    Very impressed.

After the first couple of turns, my initial impression what that it offers the best of both worlds in one.
It offer the stability & edge hold comparable to traditional camber while still retaining a playful, surfy feel from hybrid camber.
Very noticeable was how well it tracked straight over flat areas & at speed.

I purchased the Neversummer Hammer last year as I wanted better edge hold for icy east Coast Conditions.
It worked great, but I did miss the surfy and less “locked in” feel of hybrid camber.

Looks like the Proto FR is more than capable to take over where the Neversummer Hammer left off for East Coast Riding.
Now curious to see if the Proto FR can replace my Westbound for West Coast Riding…

I have found most hybrid camber snowboards to be and camber boards to dig in too much

    • Chris Harris

Thx Kevinzupp! As for Triple Camber…it’s the best profile we’ve ever created.

I´m a german snowboarder, riding mostly in Austria Alps but i was in riding in Colorado too in the past. Coming from my NS Titan 169 wich was my favourite Snowboard and is an very strong and stable full camber board to the Proto FR 164 i can only say that this board is a blast. It only took a few runs for me to get it in my head that a hybrid snowboard is more agile but can still be as stable fullcamber. You get so much pressure from the camber pockets, is nimble at any speed and also absolutely stable when straightlining it on groomers. I was able to improve my speed record in this area from 108kph (NS Titan) to 115kph (NS Proto), i wished always the groomer is steeper to get even faster. You can relax at highest speed with the triple camber, I can really feel this board has no speed limit it will always be stable. The agility at any speed level make the ride even safer too because you can evade faster if unforeseen situations arise. Also I could fly over ice and small moguls and can manouvering easy between big moguls. Shape, dampness, carbon and mechanics are all working well together that you get an absolute smooth ride. I could pressure the board harder then any board i had ever ridden withoud loosing an edge, especially in icy conditions, incredible.
I outperformed each snowboarder and skidriver all day long with a large speed excess what is normal very difficult in the afternoon when the slope conditions are terrible. Unfortunately there was no deep snow yet but I think it would work in pow great too, I am looking forward to it. Great job NS!

  16. Chris Harris

Thx Florian! Soon everyone will know…glad you’re an early adopter!

I just wanted to update my review from February 10th. I have pushed this board to the limits. Even at 73.1mph the Proto FR stayed more stable then the Jones Flagship did at 60mph. Just another testament to the Proto Fr and the triple camber design being the most stable and reliable freeride board on the market!

    • Chris Harris (verified owner)

      Seventy-three mph?!?

After having my first neversummer for years, I thought I’d treat myself to a new board. I bought another brand and committed to proprietary bindings. Long story short the board cracked after two times out. After getting hosed on the deal due to being in japan, I decided to cut my losses and go with a board that hasn’t let me down ever. This one came out and I loved the graphic. But, let me tell you, everything about the proto fr is fun! I took it out in Japan’s deep snow and it just floats! Lots of pop, and handles fantastic everywhere. Locks into rails, I love it. On top of all of that the guys at neversummer went out of their way to send it to Japan on their personal time! Thank you guys!

    • Chris Harris (verified owner)

      Thx Joshua!

  19. Sebastian Cantero (verified owner)

This board is everything. Words don’t do it justice. The triple camber gives incredible edge hold and stability at high speeds, while the rocker section keeps it floaty and forgiving for landing tricks. Surfs like a powder board. Carves like a dream. It slices. It dices. It outperforms every other board on the market. Not to mention it’s beautiful and people will stop you all day to give you likes.

    • Chris Harris (verified owner)

‘This board is everything.’ Thx Sebastian!

  20. Marc S

Treated myself to the PROTO FR 161x, and have put it through the paces up at Steamboat. NS checked all the boxes on this weapon. Quick edge to edge in the trees, handles the ice like a champ, shovels the powder, and pops off the quick hitters. Way to go NS! Best of my quiver by far.

    • Chris Harris (verified owner)

Thx Marc! Best of the quiver!

  21. Randy Stewart (verified owner)

This board just changed my skill level up a couple notches, I’ve been riding the proto 2 and did I think that board was awesome, until I got on the FR 161x. The FR is very stable at high speeds and the control of the triple camber edges holds far better then I was expecting. I wasn’t sure how it was going to handle the groomers, it blew me away at how it grabs corners. How ever didn’t get a lot of powder runs on my last trip last month the temps were below 0, so the snow was crunchy. But even then it handle beautifully. I’m an older boarder at 58 and dial it back a little more those days. The fastest I’ve hit on my Proto type two was 37 mph and on the Proto FR 42 mph. I could really feel that the board wanted me to open it up and man did it payoff, no chatter or skittish feels, I know I could have rode it faster with confidence but I’m just a two 1 week tripper a year. Next season we will open it up some more.
    Love the board, great job.

    • Chris Harris (verified owner)

…skill level up a couple of notches! thx Randy

  22. John Callaway (verified owner)

BUY THIS BOARD YOU WON’T BE SORRY! By far my favorite board. The Proto FR is amazing, it digs trenches, is very stable at high speed and on variable snow. It crushes steeps and won’t lose an edge. It is nimble and agile, responding immediately to any move the rider makes. Pow days are no problem either, with this true floater. This board is so much fun and so reliable, Never Summer out did themselves with this board.

    • Chris Harris (verified owner)

      Total game changer! Thx John!

  23. Kyle F (verified owner)

I love this board. I wish I could offer a technical break down but I can’t. Craves great, can bomb a run and feel 100% stable. Loves going into the trees and weaving through them.

    • Chris Harris (verified owner)

Thx Kyle. We think it’s a game changer.

  24. Mike Pogoda (verified owner)

This is one of the most fun all mountain boards I’ve ever ridden. It’s super responsive, floats great in powder and is ultra playful! You guys crushed it on this one! And as a fly fisherman the graphics are awesome!!

    • Chris Harris (verified owner)

      Thx Mike!

  25. dchad (verified owner)

I just got to ride my 160 and was blown away. From powder to groomers, to steeps and bumps this board charged without compromise. The board is so playful and forgiving yet has such amazing edge control as well as float through the powder. Really it’s hard to put into words because I’ve never rode anything that comes close to it. Prior to this board I was switching between the BIg Gun 169 wide and Chairman 160 depending on conditions. Unfortunately i think those boards are going to be gathering some dust… I’m 5’=10″ 185lbs and have the Union Factor bindings which I think have the perfect amount of flex for this board. Well done NS!

    • Chris Harris (verified owner)

      Game changer. Thx dchad!
